NSS 75th Anniversary Convention

Weather in the Great Basin

Spoiler: It's not as hot as you think!

Nevada enjoys several very distinct climatic zones. Visitors can experience a wide range of temperatures - from the cool alpine areas around Lake Tahoe to the extreme environments of the Mojave Desert in the south.

The region around Ely sits in the heart of the Great Basin Desert - but before that scares you away, let's talk about deserts... You might be surprised to know that Ely is only 35 miles from the nearest glacier!

Most of northern Nevada is considered a high desert. At 6,437 feet, Ely is almost 700 feet higher in elevation than Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Sure, we call it a desert, but the environment is defined more by the lack of rainfall than it is by temperature.

Ely's average daytime high in July is only 87°F. At night, it quickly cools down to about 48°F. The region's low humidity makes for some very nice summer days, but bring warm clothing for the evenings. You'll thank us later.

Nevada is the driest state in the United States. Most of the state falls in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada Range. On average, Ely's annual precipitation is just under 10 inches. At the 75th Anniversary Convention, you'll certainly notice our efforts to conserve water whenever possible. Water is a valued commodity out here.

Fire is also a significant concern. We know that cavers love campfires (and we'll have a few for you to enjoy!) But fires in our dry vegetation ignite quickly and spread rapidly. Irresponsible fires in the campground will make our security team very grumpy. Embers from your campfire can travel up to a quarter mile before dying out. Be careful! Got a carbide cannon? Leave it at home! Using it in Nevada will get you arrested.

On a lighter note, if you want to visit a glacier, just drive on over to Great Basin National Park and look at the base of Mount Wheeler!
