The National Speleological Society is the largest organization in the world dedicated to the study and exploration of caves.
For nearly 75 years, the NSS has promoted safe and responsible caving practices, effective cave and karst management, speleology, and conservation. Our members are bound together by their love of caves and caving and their desire to learn about the underground wilderness and protect it for future generations.
In July of 2016, the NSS will celebrate its 75th anniversary in Ely, Nevada, USA.

Ely (pronounced 'EE-lee') is the largest city and county seat of White Pine County, Nevada, USA. Originally founded as a stagecoach station along the Pony Express route, Ely's mining boom started with the discovery of copper in 1906. Located in the heart of the Great Basin, Ely sits about 3 1/2 hours from both Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
Between 1841 and 1869, up to 250,000 people sold their belongings, packed wagons, and set out on the California Trail through Nevada. The 2,000 mile trek meant land for some, gold and and adventure for others. What does it mean for you?
About a half dozen cave trips will be offered each day from Saturday-Friday. WNS decon is mandatory before you will be allowed on any cave trips. Our decon station will open at the campground on Saturday before convention. Trips and activities at NSS conventions are not open to the public.
Nevada has far more caves than you could possibly visit during a national convention. If that's not enough, our online trips system also includes regional attractions like ghost towns and steam trains.
Ely's Art Bank will feature a free gallery show of historic images from Lehman Cave that have not been displayed in nearly 100 years.
We're working on a large conservation-themed public mural that will be donated to the Ely Renaissance Society in 2016.
Do you want to help?
The opening Saturday of our convention will feature a large public festival in downtown Ely dedicated to cave conservation!
Can you join us?
NSS conventions rely on our dedicated volunteers to help produce the event. If you are interested in becomming part of our team, please let us know. We'd love to welcome you to Nevada!
Cavers take their science seriously. No, really - we do! Of course, sometimes it's just fun to let that all go & disconnect for a while.
The central Nevada town of Rachel sits right outside of Area 51 on the Extraterrestrial Highway.
