This is the social event that kicks off the week! Cavers from across the country and around the world rarely get the chance to meet in the same place at the same time. The annual Howdy Party will set the tone for the rest of the week!
This year, following our traditional irreverence, we've renamed this event the "Donner Party Howdy Party"! That ill-fated group of travellers came through eastern Nevada before they headed across the desert to the Sierra Nevadas.
Many things are legal in Nevada that would make the rest of the country cringe. Most of the state is wide open wilderness. Several forms of "adult" entertainment are completely legal... and there is no closing hour.
So break out your repressed Burning Man and join us at the 75th Anniversary Convention campground party on Wednesday, July 20th!
The Sedan Crater is the result of a nuclear detonation test conducted within the Nevada Test Site on July 6, 1962. Located just 12 miles southwest of Groom Lake (Area 51), the crater is a man-made object that can be seen from earth orbit with the unaided eye. The 1,280 by 320 ft crater was created by a 104-kiloton-of-TNT nuclear explosion buried 635 feet below the desert floor.
The 2016 NSS Convention will include a pre-convention field trip to this historic site.
